About

My job is first and foremost to identify if the right problems are being solved. I do this by challenging assumptions and asking the right questions. I then synthesize user needs, business requirements, constraints, and stakeholder feedback into functional and intuitive solutions. Function here is key. Does the solution serve the purpose? Aesthetics are important only insofar as it serves this end. An ugly user interface is not benign. It draws the user’s attention away from the purpose of the product. Ultimately, for the look and feel to be right, it should go largely unnoticed.

My areas of expertise include:

  • User experience design: I define the end-to-end process and UX patterns

  • Interaction design: I indicate the way the elements behave

  • User Interface design: I specify the way the product looks

  • Information architecture: I determine how the content is organized

  • Business strategy: I consider the organization's goals and initiatives

  • Branding: I strive for corporate brand cohesion

  • Graphic design: I apply foundational principles of composition encompassing typography, imagery, and iconography

My passion is solving everyday problems and bringing
coherence to where it is lacking.

My Process

1. Define the problem

I work with the product owner to understand the goal of the project, and how it relates to the business. We identify pain points, and define constraints including timeline and scope, and determine target audiences.

2. Ideation

This is where I do my research and start sketching and creating wireframes. I use these to get validation from the product owner of my approach. This is done quickly, within 1-2 days so that if my course is wrong, it can be corrected early. These early sketches will also help the PO identify and define additional requirements. Sources of my research will include external searches for similar products as well as internal properties and existing UX patterns, which can inform the design and reinforce consistency in the user experience, as well as for the brand. User journeys will be defined here.

3. Design and Prototyping

Once the direction has been validated, I create a high-resolution design using Photoshop and create the user flow demo in Invision. The prototyping allows us to test the flow for various device resolutions and helps us to identify any gaps. (It can also be used for user testing later on.)

4. Team review

Once the solution has been approved, the final design is brought to the development team within the Agile process, where it is validated or flagged for concerns.

5. Specifications

I provide detailed specifications or general guidelines to the development team, depending on if the product is new or if it is an update to an existing product. I also provide properly formatted and sized imagery.
